Lead Pastor – Chris McGowan

Chris has been part of the pastoral team here at West Ryde since August 2010. Her responsibilities include Discipleship, Preaching, Women’s ministry and whatever else comes her way. She’s married to Rob, a fire-fighter and they have 4 great adult children.
Chris enjoys spending time with people and loves being outside whether in the garden, walking in the bush or running around on the soccer field. She’s passionate about building community and seeing people develop and grow in their relationship with Jesus.
Student Pastor – David Um
David became a follower of Jesus from age 15 and grew in the Lord through God’s grace in Korea. Since arriving in Australia in 2008, he has led English worship services for 7 years and evangelized many nonbelievers. Previously he studied in his native language (Korean) and gained a B.A and a M.Div. in theology. And he is now studying theology (in English) towards a M.Div. at Morling College. Now he is serving as our student pastor at WRBC.
He has great enthusiasm for multicultural ministry. Especially, he is passionate about meeting many people from diverse backgrounds and helping them find their goal for the future. He likes to play many sports such as soccer, tennis, basketball and badminton. He is married to Esther and they have three kids, Joy, John and Joseph.
Administration & Communications – Cassandra Falson
part-time: Tuesday, Thursday
Cassandra is married to Mark and has two adult children – Erin & Lachlan & one teenager – Amy. Cassandra has been a part of the West Ryde team in a part-time capacity since 2008. She enjoys helping to lighten the load of the pastors through her admin & communications role. She enjoys greeting all who pass by her office but is often ‘in the zone’ – head down, task-oriented mode.
When not at work , Cassandra likes a good book or movie, bushwalking and holidaying with her family.
Elected leaders & officers
Secretary – James Piper
James is married to Jenny and has two young girls: Miriam and Aurelia. After moving into the area in 2010 he joined West Ryde Baptist Church, and has served in a variety of ministry roles. He enjoys applying his administrative skills to assist the Church in the position of Secretary.
James works full-time as a Principal Engineer in the transport sector. In his spare time James enjoys cooking, board games, cinema, and occasional do-it-yourself handiwork.
Treasurer – Cindy Phipps
As the Treasurer, Cindy looks after the Finances of the Church, ably assisted by the Finance Committee. Her role, apart from paying the bills, is to ensure that we all understand ‘how we’re going’.. financially, and to provide regular information that both encourages and challenges the congregation.
Cindy is passionate about transforming the church vision, into tangible ministry outcomes – by working with the Leadership Team in developing annual budgets that reflect our Ministry heart.
Discipleship – Cameron Phipps
As Discipleship leader, Cameron is passionate in helping people grow in their faith through regular participation in Bible study groups. He especially loves journeying alongside new and ‘not-yet’ believers as they discover and learn more about God, and His incredible plan for humanity.
Cameron is married to Cindy and they have been attending WRBC since 2001. They are blessed to have 4 children: Joshua, Hayley, Aaron and Alyssa. Whilst Cameron works full-time in the IT industry, he knows that Cindy has the more challenging role of full-time super-mum!
Community – Parya Mirani
Parya is our leader for Community, involved in helping our church grow in relationship with God, each other and with our local neighbours. She is married to Abbas and they have a beautiful young son, Parsam. Parya has been part of our church family since coming to Sydney in 2014. She enjoys visiting and chatting to people as well as sharing about her faith and journey to Australia. Parya also loves cooking and gardening.
Elder – Helen Carruthers
Helen has been part of West Ryde Baptist Church since 2000 and loves being part of the leadership team. Since her husband’s death nearly three years ago she has been more involved. She loves relating to people, especially those from other cultural backgrounds.
She loves looking after her grandchildren. In her spare time she loves watching AFL football, reading, researching her family tree, and visiting or enjoying a coffee with others.
